Every once in awhile I'm asked to look in on what our youngerpeople are following. Albeit I'm getting to old to comment on any ofthe content; the VEVO web site is extremely popular. Perhaps becauseit's free, within limits; “your video playlist” can contain up to75 videos (Watching these videos takes up considerable 'band width'and will be very slow on 'dial-up' connections; perhaps defer ituntil you're at the library or at a public WiFi site.)

Over the lastyear we have all noticed a tremendous increase in the number of newsitems about Bank fraud, Credit and Debit card fraud, email spamattacks, Internet fraud and Identity Theft. In the USA identitytheft is on the rise, with 11.1 million victims and an increase of12% over last year. (Source: GrandRapids, MI (PRWEB) October 26, 2010). Estimated losses exceed$100 Billion US Dollars. Other sources say that, as of December,2010 the problems is now doubling every year.

Even J. EdgarHoover, the former director of the F.B.I. would never have dreamedhow things have changed in this modern world.

Now, I've decidedthat it is notenough just to complain about the problems. If all of us donot helpfix the problems,they will only get worse. This is so serious a matter that, if it continues, willlimit ourability to freely use our computers and Internetactivities could slowly (or suddenly) grind to a stop. I think itis time for all of us to get proactive and block, catch and prosecutethese Internetbad guys. We have all got a job to doand I am confident that with a concerted effort from all computer andInternet users worldwide that we can take back this onslaught fromthese Computerand Other Fraud artistes;theseInternet bad guys:

Download, use and report problem sites to Safe Browsing Tool | WOT Web of Trust. and
Report fraudulent activities so that the authorities can deal with Internet and other fraud. These are the links to reporting sites. FBI - Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) | Home, Interpol - Information Technology Crime and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Take some time out of your busy lives to learn about the scams and frauds. Take steps to protect yourself. If you have not been doing some of these things already, you may already be compromised. Tips to avoid fraud: FBI, Interpol Checklists, RCMP Scams and Fraud, RCMP Internet Security.

Proceeding ascautiously as I usually do, last year I was personally caught in acriminally fraudulent process, a phishingscam. My simple mistake, I think, was made when I typed in my emailaccount name and password into my computer while I was in a Starbucks(orany other 'open' and unencrypted site). Once I was on an 'open network' someone(and, it could have been anyone in the vicinity of that wireless opensite) copiedall of my email address book information and sent out 'phony' emailsto my contacts,pretending to be me, StanWebb.

Now I am doubly careful. After that incident I took my computerin for a security review, 'scrubbed' the hard drive of all malicious,suspicious looking material. And, added more anti-spyware andanti-virus programs, and turned on all systems for daily virusdefinition updating. I'vespent much of the last 8 months to doubly securemy systems and learn othersuggestions to help us all increase our security. Ipass these on to you, with links, if you areinterested.

Of course, among many other things including notifying you that Ihad been scammed, I had to change all of my many passwords. I did find a great way to do that efficiently and for free atLastPass ¹ (moreinformation at the bottom ¹).

In an effort to combat bad guy's Internet shenanigans Ijoined WOT - Web of Trust which allows us all to report dubious sitesand THEN it automatically temporarily blocks a problem site, givingus the chance to proceed, or not.

If you'll forgive me for amoment, I'll revert to my teaching days. Of course we should alwaysset-up modern anti-virus, anti-spyware, e-mail scanner, linkscanner, resident shield and related programs. But, asalready mentioned, there is one more step you might like to take. I've joined a group that allows us all to intervene to try and limitthese problem:

SafeBrowsing Tool | WOTWeb of Trust- WOTis a community-based, free safe surfing tool for browsers thatprovides website ratings & reviews to help webusers as they search, surf & shop on line – before they evenenter a potential problem site. WOT is backed by all of the Internetheavy weights, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and all! Once you join youwill actually become a reviewerand can report any site against several standards that areestablished.
Forinstance, this week a friend referred me to a site to check mydriver's license information. When I tried to open it, becauseI have WOT installed,I was given a big REDCIRCLE warning. The site referred to me is nota trustworthy site. Do you know who this is? It had all of the hallmarks of a fraud andI subsequently reported it to the RCMP- Reporting Scams and Frauds.Atypical spamming scheme is for someone to gather a lot of yourpersonal information, and after that, clicking a box. That might anybox asking for a mouse click, even if one that is written 'pleaseremove'. You may not actually know it, but by clicking on a box "PleaseRemove" that, in itself, may be just a lie. In fact, it mightactually give this curiosity seeker full access to your computer.

Thislooked like the type of fraudulent activities that the authoritiesare trying to get a handle on. These links to their sites will takeyou to information and reporting. FBI- InternetCrime Complaint Center (IC3) | Home,Interpol- Information Technology Crimeand the RCMP. Tipsto avoid fraud: FBI,InterpolChecklists,RCMPScams and Fraud,RCMPInternet Security.

TheCanadian Anti-Fraud Centre advises consumers not to open unsolicitedemails or when the sender is unknown. Spam usually means scam. Justdelete them!

Do not downloadunwanted software from these kind of pop ups as they are quite likelyhave harmful software that can damage your computer or steal yourpersonal information. Following the above and below guidelines willgreatly help to protect you from Internet fraud, identity theft, spamand Internet scams. Also check out websites like The InternetWatchdogfor more advice.

Even withoutaccess to your computer the bad guys in the Internet world can crosscorrelate to all of the other informationon the Internet,or inyour garbage can. With just with your name and address, they can access your telephonenumber, they can access your personal property records, registeredloans outstanding and so much more information that is openlyavailable on 'public - open source' web sites, like govt propertyrecords.
There goal may be to eventually get your job pay stub andemployer's name, your CPP, Bank Account, Debit and Credit Card,Insurance Policy, Old Age Security, Passport Information, SocialInsurance or Social Security Number, Unemployment Insurance, Welfarereceipts and any other information that will allow them gain accessto all of your information - possibly setting you up for a case of'identitytheft'. A typical spamming scheme is for someone to gather a lot of yourpersonal information including bank account, debit and credit cardinformation. There have been many successful frauds committed thisway – just by withdrawing all of the money out of your bankaccounts, and getting a copy of you PIN number on your Credit/DebitCards, and/ordestroy your credit rating and make a mess of your entire financiallife. The Internetbad guys justdo not care about you.

Ofcourse, you know that you should shred allof your incoming mail.³ Very often, dumpster divers are after a way more than bottles andcans. They are after information about your whole life. One of thethings they may be getting ready to do is to send out change ofaddress cards to all of your creditors, even to your pension andIncome Department. That may give them a few months lead-time to dobad things, without you even knowing it.

With more people shopping online, the increased pool of victims seems to lure out identitythieves right along with those out for a shopping spree. Since youare at more risk during the holiday season than you are at othertimes of the year, take some necessary precautions to further protectyour identity, your credit and your money.

² Guard Your Credit Cards

The plastic seems to fly outmore than usual as a way to make holiday purchases. While there areadvantages to using credit cards, doing so also increases the chancesthat your credit card information may land in the wrong hands. Ifyou’re shopping on line, make sure that you’re checking out on asecure server. This is often indicated on the site with the lettersSSL or with a verification badge, such as Verisign,that authenticates it is a safe site. A secure site scrambles yourcredit card information when it is transmitted from the shopping cartof the website to the credit card processor. This prohibits a thieffrom reading and fraudulently using your credit card information.

If you’re shopping on line, check with your bank to see if itoffers a one-time-use credit card number that you can plug inwhen you’re making a purchase. This helpful tool prevents identitytheft since the digits can only be used once.

Many of my clients also usePayPal– to SendMoney, Pay Online and/or Set Up a Merchant Account, becauseof its verification protocols.

If you’re shopping off line, pay with cash instead, if you can.This saves your information from being stolen or 'swiped', andeliminates the heart attack that can come with the credit cardstatement after the holidays are over.

³ Shred andDestroy

During the holiday rush, it isalso easy to lose track of important information or discard thisinformation without giving it much thought. Avoid throwing awaycredit card receipts, packing slips and bill statements that containyour name, address, credit card information and other personalinformation that thieves can use to commit identity fraud. YouTube has just announced that they have increased the video time on their free site > to 15 minutes, up from 10 minutes. (See additional information here)
Annotations are getting easier to add on YouTube. For more information, particularly as it might apply to designers, go to the YouTube Video - Picanno - a cool web 2.0 photo annotation tool for web/graphic designers. The biggest fault the YouTube system is that it doesn’t let you link out to 3rd party sites (huge spam issues would arise). Annotations do help you to grow subscribers. Used correctly (and there are tons of creative ways in which you can do this – see the last few seconds of the video, below) annotations are an easy way for you to quickly drive some new subscribers to your channel or views to other videos that might not have been getting so much traffic.

Facebook eked past Yahoo to become the second most popular site in the U.S. according to new Compete data.
The last time there was a shake up at the top of the rankings was in February 2008, when Google smoked Yahoo.
Compete also says Facebook users are super engaged. According to its data 11% of all time spent online was at Facebook, versus 4% for Google and Yahoo.

Now one, the Web 2.0 Validator is on holidays for the summer? and on another (web20workgroup.com) I am getting avast! - antivirus protection warnings. I did not even bother to check it our at WOT- Web Of Trust.

The avast! warning: “The web site at web20workgroup.com has been reported as an attack site and has been blocked based on your security preferences. Attack sites try to install programs that steal private information, use your computer to attack others, or damage your system.”

As a starting point here are 10(+) open source alternatives to Moodle. These are deliberately brief descriptions, and I would encourage you to visit these sites and explore each solution in some detail.

ATutor Actually an LCMS, ATutor also offers tools for the management of learning. The “A” stands for Accessible and it has excellent support for key accessibility standards as well as support for SCORM, IMS, etc.
Claroline Aimed more at the educational than corporate arena, this system is based around specific pedagogical principles (as is Moodle). Supports SCORM content as well as a built in Wiki and other online content tools.
Docebo In use in corporate and higher education settings. Offers support for a number of different learning models and is compatible with SCORM 1.2 and 2004. It offers interfaces to external systems such as video conferencing and HR systems.
Dokeos A very well featured LMS that also offers content authoring and video conferencing tools. Supports converting Office documents into Flash. Offers user synchronisation with HR management systems such as Oracle and SAP.
eFront The base install is quite minimalist, but this is easily extended with modules available from the site. Commercial versions with additional features are also available.
Ganesha This LMS developed by Anema, has been around since 2001 and is in use in several large organisations. The site, and the LMS itself, are in French but it can be translated.
ILIAS Provides testing and assessment tools as well as collaboration tools such as chat and forums, and distribution technologies like RSS and podcasts.
.LRN Originally developed at MIT, .LRN claims to be the most widely adopted enterprise class open source LMS solution.
OLAT A well featured system in its tenth year of development, but has quite steep server requirements.
openelms Marketed specifically as a business solution, and claims a diverse customer base that ranges from Merrill Lynch to Queens Park Rangers football club.
Sakai Aimed at Universities,this project has a clear roadmap and has seem considerable development in the last few years. Backed by the Sakai Foundation which manages relationships with educational and commercial supporters.”

S. Naval Observatory (USNO). Readings from the clocks of these agencies contribute to world time, called Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The time maintained by both agencies should never differ by more than 0.000 0001 seconds from UTC.

Globalization and distance has made it confusing to keep time straight for centuries. That is particularly true in this digital age.

And anachronisms, the 'abbreviations', have changed. The new standard is now called UTC - Coordinated Universal Time. The International Telecommunication Union wanted Coordinated Universal Time to have a single abbreviation for all languages. English speakers and French speakers each wanted the initials of their respective language's terms to be used internationally: "CUT" for "coordinated universal time" and "TUC" for "temps universel coordonné". This resulted in the final compromise of using "UTC".[5] Previously there was GMT - Greenwich Mean Time. There are a few differences in the calculations between the two terms, however, for many reasons the world is now adopting the newer UTC standard.

“Coordinated Universal Time is a reference time for events. It is based on and almost identical to the old Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) along 0 degrees longitude (the line that passes through Greenwich in London, England). We now all communicate in relation to that UTC. For instance, you might be in a time zone that is UTC-4(hours); or one that is UTC+8(hours). In areas that have adopted seasonally changing 'daylight savings time', those one hour differences change when the switch is made back and forth to/from daylight savings time.

I've also found that a world map with time zone changes is invaluable since it shows relative relationships, and times in each location. Just hover your mouse over a location on the world map and that local time will be shown. To do this you will need Adobe Flash Player. TIP: It's always useful information for your readers, in your first communication or post, to state where you're from and the UTC time. EXAMPLE: Here in Vancouver, Canada @ UTC-7 it is a beautiful spring day (during Summer's Daylight Saving Time).

PS: The time in London, United Kingdom is not always '0' as many might assume, but is UTC+1 during BST – British Summer Time (Daylight Saving Time.)

This is not the normal thing to be posted here; but I wanted to take a moment to reflect and show a sign of respect to a friend who had died. And, perhaps we can all take a lesson or two from a wise 'elder statesman'; someone who has been through it all before.

Dave, my friend and bridge partner died recently, at age 92. He had suffered a stroke 10 years previously which had left him paralized and in a wheelchair. Although the paralysis was over his whole body, he did have very limited use of his right hand. He could not speak.

He had lived. He was a young man during the 1930s “Dirty Thirties” Depression. He had fought in World War II. He had married and raised a family. During his working career he worked in 'electronics'; through tube radios, then radar to computer chips. In other words, he had a wealth of wisdom to impart.

We were able to bid and play bridge with the help of some assistive devices. He was by far the best player in our group. He always had the kindness and patience to teach beginners.

He had become computer literate, and used the 'hunt and peck' keyboard method with the limited use of his right hand. He composed articles, wrote correspondence and emails, and kept in touch with friends. Those of us who were more 'able-bodied' were amazed at the amount of effort and time that he put into work.

He was a true inspiration to us all with his Gaelic sense of wit, irony, and wry humor. That was with him until the end of his life.

We were all very saddened with his loss. That was partially because he brought such happiness and joy to all of those around him. Indeed, he provided hope and inspiration for younger people hoping to learn to grow older gracfully.

It was his material, and with his permission, that we began a series of posts called “Dave Sez”. There will be more posts scheduled for the 1^st day of following months, but some of those posts from past months are here:
